Incision Scars 101

Incision Scars 101

When thinking about plastic surgery, one of the worries that may come to your mind is in regards to your incision scar. There are many factors that your plastic surgeon will talk into consideration when making an incision to minimize or even hide the inevitable scarring, and knowing that your surgeon has expertise in this area is certainly a factor when deciding on a board certified plastic surgeon to perform your surgery.

Depending on the procedure, some incision scars are more easily hidden than others. Location also plays a large factor in the visibility of your scar. Our board certified plastic surgeons will go above and beyond to ensure that your scar is as hidden as possible. Genetics can ultimately affect your scar and its overall appearance, not everyone heals the same way.

One of the best ways to minimize scarring is to aid the healing process. Here are a few tips on how to do so:

  1. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, cut down on calories, fatty foods and stodgy carbs. The more nutritional and anti-oxidant value your food has the better your body can heal.
  2. Drink plenty of water. Make sure you are drinking the recommended amount of body of water a day for your height and weight. Water will do wonders for your body especially during the recovery process.
  3. Most surgery do require serious movement restrictions, talk to your board certified plastic surgeon about what you can do post-surgery that will get your heart to pump blood around the body. This will clean out the old toxins and refresh the wound site with new, flesh blood. This will bring a steadier supply of nutrients and oxygen to allow for the tissue to rebuild more effectively.
  4. Stop smoking. Smoking directly affects our ability to carry oxygen around the body. Tobacco smoke causes blood cells to be occupied by carbon monoxide (a deadly poison) and therefore cannot carry body around the oxygen as needed. This will make it harder for your body to work and heal the wound.
  5. Gently massage the area, if you are not in too much pain, to stimulate blood flow and get rid of the old toxic waste matter such as dead cells.
  6. Closely follow the post-surgery instructions provided by your board certified plastic surgeon. Ask your doctors any questions that you may have and do not hesitate to call their office is something does not seem right post surgery.

Then most importantly, enjoy your new look!
