Eyes are usually the first feature that we notice about someone and since the skin is so thin in the eye area, it is often the first part of the face to age. As we get older the elasticity of our eyelids can become compromised, leading to the appearance of excess skin in the upper eyelid. This can make eyes look droopy and fatigued. In addition, the under eye area can appear puffy, have noticeable bags or it may appear wrinkled. Your eyes may look tired, even when they are not.
An eyelid lift, or Blepharoplasty, can give the eyes a definite lift. Ohio Plastic Surgery Specialists can perform several different types of upper and lower eyelid surgeries that will restore youthful, effervescent eyes. We tailor each surgery to the individual patient because some eyes may require removal of excess skin, muscle or fat and for others a lower lid procedure may be performed through an invisible incision inside the eyelid. Yet for some the inner eyelid fat pads may need to be repositioned to prevent a hollowed-out appearance. There is no one-sized-fits-all Blepharoplasty solution. Others may be well served by a non-surgical approach such as Botox or Laser Resurfacing.
One of the main causes for drooping eyelids is simply due to age. As our face ages so do our eyebrows. When the outer parts of the brows begin to droop, the upper eyelids may look saggy, as if you had grown excess skin that you didn’t have just a few years before. Removing this superfluous skin can drastically improve the appearance of the eyes. Another reason for “tired eyes” is because of sagging eyelids caused by eyelid fat movement. In youth, this fat is held back by a thin wall of tissue called the orbital septum, which unfortunately can sag and bulge with age giving the appearance of “baggy” upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty removes the excess fat and tightens the wall, returning a youthful look to your eyes.
The lower eyelids also demand special attention. The aged appearing eyelid may be caused by excess skin, a loosened muscle, a weak suspension system, or a combination of all these factors. Occasionally the lower lid tone may be weakened and a tightening procedure such as a canthoplasty or canthopexy is needed. Sometimes eyelid lifts are combined with other procedures, most often endoscopic Eyebrow and Forehead lifts, to lift the height and preserve the curve of the upper brow. This rejuvenating, permanent procedure can be done through small incisions hidden in your hairline. This procedure strives to elevate the eyebrows to a pleasing, youthful position, and to remove the muscles that cause wrinkling in the brow region. These are the same muscles that many patients have treated with Botox to reduce movement. Your Ohio Plastic Surgery Specialist will discuss whether you might be a candidate for this combined procedure during your initial consultation.
