What are facial fillers?
Facial Fillers are collagen material injected into the skin for aesthetic reasons. They are a soft injectable gel that is based on hyaluronic acid which exists naturally in all living things. Hyaluronic acid helps in transporting nutrients to the skin. It plays the role of lubricant and shock absorber in joints. It also plays an important role in maintaining the water balance in the body. Dermal fillers resemble the natural hyaluronic acid present in the body. Facial (Injectable) Fillers can be classified into various types depending upon the main component used.
Our Columbus plastic surgeons will work with you to decide which type of facial filler is suitable for you. We take into account various factors like age, skin texture, condition, etc. before recommending the course of action. Choosing the right medical professional is of paramount importance if you want to get the maximum results with the minimum of side effects.
Juvederm is one of the hyaluronic acid bases Facial Fillers. It is a FDA approved treatment. It is developed by using Hylacross technology. This technology is helpful in producing soft and smooth gel. The soft and smooth consistency of the gel makes sure that the gel flows freely into the skin. It is formulated with local anesthetic lidocaine to reduce the discomfort of the patient. Lidocaine creates numbness in the area within a few seconds. This prevents the need for use of additional anesthesia. Juvederm adds volume to lift and contour the face. While it remains for a longer period of time it is not permanent.
Juvederm is safe to use, but it should be avoided in people who have a history of severe allergies like allergies to gram-positive bacterial protein etc. It should not be injected if the patient has an infection in the area to be injected. It is not advisable to pregnant and lactating women. There are no severe side effects to Juvederm. There may be redness, pain, bruising or tenderness in skin for a few days ranging from 1-7 days.
Restylane is also made from hyaluronic acid. The difference between Restylane and Juvederm is that the latter is used to lift and contour the face and Restylane is used to get rid of moderate lines and wrinkles in the face. Restylane was approved by FDA in the year 2003. It is most recommended for people in the age group between 35-60 years.
Restylane is a clear liquid non animal based gel. The injection is administered in our office under local anesthesia. It does not contain lidocaine and it can sometimes be more painful than Juvederm. However, the duration of the treatment is only a few minutes. It is a quick and easy office visit procedure.
Our Restylane patients resume normal activities immediately, provided they do not expose their face to sunlight. The treatment has produced positive results in 80% of the people. It is not a permanent treatment and follow up treatment may be needed after a year or two to maintain your results.
The common side effects of Restylane are redness and pain in the injected area, nausea and flu like symptoms. These symptoms will recede in a few days. If the symptoms persist for more than a week or if the pain is unbearable, doctor’s attention should be sought immediately.

Q: What is the difference between Restylane and Restylane Silk?

Q: Can you combine this product with other anti-aging techniques?
A: Yes, you may have additional filler or Botox on the day of your Restylane Silk treatment. However, as with any filler treatment, all laser treatments, peels, or microdermabrasion should be spaced two weeks apart from your Restylane Silk treatment.
Q: When should I schedule a follow-up appointment?
A: After your initial treatment, it is best to return for a follow-up appointment in 1-2 weeks.
Radiesse is another FDA approved Facial Filler. It is a non-toxic and non-allergic filler injection. Radiesse is a compound of calcium hydroxyl apatite microspheres. It consists of calcium and phosphate ions that exist naturally in the body. It also contains carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, glycerin and sterile water. The procedure is done in our Columbus plastic surgeon‘s office and will not take more than 15 minutes. Our patients can go home immediately. Radiesse results start to show in a week and the effects of the injection remain for more than two years. Follow up treatments are needed to maintain the benefits of Radiesse.
While there are no general side effects there may be mild swelling and redness in the region for a day or two. Intolerable pain must be reported to the doctor immediately.
Fat Grafting is also called as Fat Injections. This process involves the transfer of fat from hips, thighs or other parts to the face that has lost fat due to aging. The fat harvested from the patient’s body is injected to reduce wrinkles and can help in restoration of youthful look.
The chances of allergic reactions with Fat grafting are very limited because fat is harvested from your own body. This procedure is very effective for mild to moderate signs of aging. Fat injections are recommended for physically healthy individuals because the recovery period is usually longer.
The recovery period differs depending upon the amount of fat transferred. It also depends upon the healing power and health of the patient. Normally, it may take two weeks to recover after the procedure. The patient is recommended to return to work after 10 days. The patient must not expose her face to the sunlight for at least two weeks.
The results of Fat Grafting or Fat Injections last for a longer period of time than the other facial filler injections. In some patients it may be a permanent solution.
Kybella® is an injectable that is the first and only FDA approved treatment used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin, also referred to as a “double chin”. The active ingredient in Kybella® is deoxycholic acid, a natural-occuring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Once it is injected into the area below your chin, it causes the destruction of fat calls. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. It is up to you and your doctor to determine how many treatments you would need based on your desired results. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions. Kybella® is designed to destroy the fat cells, once these cells are destroyed they cannot store or accumulate fat, therefore retreatment is not expected.
