Breast Reductions Can Help Women of Many Ages
Women young and old can suffer from back and neck pain, restricted activity, and poor self-image resulting from large breasts. These conditions can be relieved with a breast reduction procedure known as mammaplasty. At Ohio Plastic Surgery Specialists, we help women of many ages achieve a breast size proportionate to their body to improve self-image and the ability to participate in physical activities.
Best Candidates for A Breast Reduction
Breast reduction surgery is meant for women who have large breasts and want to resolve issues such as:
- Chronic back, neck and shoulder pain that requires pain medications
- Chronic rash or skin irritation under the breasts
- Nerve pain
- Restricted activity
- Poor self-image related to large breasts
- Difficulty fitting into bras and clothing
Some women experience these issues as young as 16. While breast reduction can often be performed safely and successfully for patients in their mid-teens, many plastic surgeons prefer patients to wait until they are at least 18 before undergoing the procedure. One reason is that breast development continues throughout the teen years and may not be complete until the early twenties. Waiting until the breasts are completely developed can avoid the need for a second breast reduction in the next few years.
Younger and middle-aged women are not the only ones that are candidates for breast reductions. Older women that are healthy and suffering from issues due to their large breasts are also great candidates. Dr. Bernacki performs many reductions each year for women young and old and has great success making the patient happy with their results.
For patients who are overweight or obese, a strict diet and weight loss program should be completed before considering a breast reduction. Breast size can be affected by weight fluctuations, so it is important to be at a consistent, healthy weight for at least six months to one year prior to considering surgery.
