Determining Type, Size, and Incision Point for Breast Augmentation

Determining Type, Size, and Incision Point for Breast Augmentation

At Ohio Plastic Surgery Specialists, our most popular cosmetic procedure is breast augmentation. Learn more about breast augmentation options and if you are an ideal candidate below.

Ideal Breast Augmentation Candidates

There are three groups of women that are ideal candidates for breast augmentation. The first group are women that have had small or disproportionate breasts their entire life and are not happy with their appearance. The second group are women who may have thought they have good size breasts but with age, the size and shape of breasts have changed. As patients age, they lose breast tissue and tissue is replaced with fat. Fat has less of a shape than breast tissue and the skin can lose elasticity. The third group of women are those that have experienced a change in shape and size resulting from weight loss and gain or pregnancy. These different groups of women have decided to make a change and explore the risks and benefits of a breast augmentation procedure. At Ohio Plastic Surgery Specialists, our first and most important part of the consultation process is determining if the candidate can safely go through and heal from the operation. Once Dr. Bernacki has deemed someone as a candidate during the consultation process, he will explain breast augmentation surgery options.

Incision Options for Breast Augmentation Procedures

There are four different incision points an implant can be placed through. The first most popular incision point is in the fold underneath the breast. A two-inch incision is made where the fold of the breast meets the chest. Another popular incision point is around the areola. This incision point can sometimes be too small depending on the circumference of the areola. The third possible point of the incision is in the armpit. While this option is great for camouflaging the point of incision, it can also cause greater harm to arteries in the area and more complications. The fourth point of an incision is at the belly button. A tunnel is made underneath skin and fat of the abdomen, over the ribs and into the pocket of the breast. This incision point can result in a higher complication rate and can only be used with saline implants.

Types of Breast Implants

There are three types of implants used for breast augmentation, saline, silicone and structured implants. Structured implants are inserted into the breast deflated and filled in multiple compartments with saline. An advantage of this type of implant is that it is softer and more natural feeling compared to traditional saline implants. Also, if the implant ruptures, the breast will deflate and the body will absorb the saline rather than a silicone implant that requires and MRI to determine if it has ruptured.

Determining the Size of Breast Implants

At Ohio Plastic Surgery Specialists, we help patients determine the size of implant they should get. The patient is part of the decision making process for the size of the implant and it is ultimately their decision on what size implant to get. We give a range of sizes appropriate for their body frame and stature. We then allow the patient to try on different sizes with a bra or tightly fitting shirt to view the profile and size of the final result.
