Has it been a few years since your breast augmentation procedure? You may remember Dr. Bernacki saying you should schedule a check up or getting an MRI every few years after your procedure to make sure your implants are in good shape. At the time, you may have thought you’ve got some time before you need to worry about anything. However, if you think back and realize those few years have caught up with you, it might be time to schedule a check up with Ohio Plastic Surgery Specialists.
The FDA recommends patients with silicone implants should get an MRI screening three years after your initial breast augmentation procedure and every two years after that. An MRI will check for any tears or ruptures in the implant. Silicone implants are made with a firm gel that will hold its shape even if there is a rupture. Determining if there has been a rupture in a silicone implant is virtually impossible without the help of an MRI. Although the silicone implant will keep its shape and nothing will leak into the bloodstream if there is a tear, it’s best to be on the safe side and replace any ruptured implant.
For patients with saline implants, the check up schedule is a little different. In the case of a torn saline implant, the patient will know right away because the breast will instantly lose volume. If this happens, it’s important to seek medical attention right away to avoid additional complications. Dr. Bernacki still recommends patients with saline implants get check ups. If you are happy with the way your breasts look and are not experiencing any problems, getting your implants checked every five to ten years is reasonable.
