Breast Augmentation Recovery

What To Expect During Your Breast Augmentation Recovery

Breast augmentation continues to be one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the United States. After the procedure, many women report being more confident with their bodies. However, it’s important to remember this is an invasive procedure. Before scheduling the procedure, candidates should learn what to expect post-operation and how long it will take to feel recovered and back to everyday activities.

0 to 48 Hours Post-Operation

After waking from anesthesia, you will likely feel dazed and sore, but these effects should wear off in a few hours. Since you will be going under general anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you home from the surgery center and stay with you overnight. The first day following surgery, you will most likely be moderately uncomfortable. This discomfort can be relieved by taking a prescription or over-the-counter pain medication, depending on what your surgeon recommends. Some swelling, bruising on the chest, and nausea are also common. Your arm movements will be restricted for the first 24 to 48 hours following the procedure. Make sure you have easily removable shirts ready for the first few weeks of recovery. Button-down tops and tops that zip up in the front are best. Wear a surgical bra and compression bandages. This will help minimize discomfort and protect the wounds. You will not be able to perform any physical activity at this time and should focus on resting. Avoiding nicotine and alcohol are also highly recommended for healing purposes. During the first days of your recovery, you will need help moving around, getting dressed, and preparing meals. Be sure you and your home are prepared to make things as easy as possible when recovering. By the second day, it will be ok to take a shower.

2 to 10 Days After Procedure

After being cleared at your post-op checkup, you will start displacement exercises. These exercises will help form a natural looking breast and prevent common breast augmentation complications. In most cases, you are cleared to drive 48 hours after the surgery if you are not taking any pain medications that impair your motor skills. At the one week mark, you’ll return for a post-op appointment to have your incisions and breasts inspected.

10 to 14 Days After Surgery

Most breast augmentation patients are able to resume light activities after two weeks with the doctor’s approval. However, you should avoid bending, lifting, and other forms of strenuous movements. At this time, your doctor will likely clear you to return to work and resume regular daily activities. Patients are still not allowed to perform any heavy lifting and should avoid any intense activity.

2 to 4 Weeks After Breast Augmentation

Continue to regularly do the displacement exercises. You will notice that daily activities are becoming easier. Many doctors restrict upper body exercises until at least one month after surgery.

4 to 6 Weeks After Breast Augmentation

About one month after the surgery, you will start to see some results. Your breasts will start to settle into a more natural position and you shouldn’t need any medications for pain. You can start to slowly transition from your surgical bras to sports or push up bra. Most patients can exercise without restraint, sleep on their abdomen and sides. After being cleared by your doctor, you can slowly start to do upper body exercises.

A Few Months After Breast Augmentation Procedure

You should now be able to see your desired results. You should be cleared to resume heavy lifting and upper body exercises around 3 months post operation. Scar tissue will begin to heal and fade into your surrounding skin over time. At Ohio Plastic Surgery Specialists, we recommend that you schedule one or two follow-up appointments in the month following your procedure to consult with your doctor about your results. Dr. Bernacki will observe the incision site and breast fold to ensure proper healing, and to confirm that you’re happy with the implant size and shape.

At Ohio Plastic Surgery Specialists, we walk you through the recovery process and are there to help every step of the way. If you are considering a breast augmentation, call our office at to schedule a consultation.
