What To Expect on the Day of Your Breast Augmentation Procedure

The day of your breast augmentation procedure can be an exciting yet nerve-racking day. To put your mind at ease and know exactly what to expect, we’ve explained each step of the procedure below.

Before the Procedure

The procedure is scheduled at an outpatient surgery center. You should arrive at the location an hour before the scheduled time of the procedure. We will get all the necessary information from you before you are taken back to the preoperative holding area. You will then change into a gown. The nurses will talk to you about your past medical history and ask some questions. When you are done meeting with the nurse, they will give you an IV with fluid and antibiotics to minimize infection. Then, you will meet with an anesthesiologist to ask any questions or address any concerns you may have before going under. After that, you will meet with Dr. Bernacki to discuss the procedure and exactly what will be done. Dr. Bernacki will use a marker to mark the site which will be operated on. He will then ask if you have any additional questions. After all your questions are addressed, you will sign a consent form to verify the surgery that has been discussed. You will then be taken back to the operating room. A nurse will give you medication to help you relax. Then, you will be transferred from the bed to the operating table. After you are placed on the operating table, the anesthesiologist will put you to sleep.

During the Procedure

After you are placed under anesthesia, Dr. Bernacki and his team do a timeout for patient safety. Following patient prep and before any incisions are made, every single person in the room stops and pays attention to Dr.Bernacki. This is an added degree of safety for the patient. The name, date of birth, and the medical record number of the patient are announced. The nurse reads off consent of procedure the patient has agreed to be performed. Then, the nurse counts off instruments, needles, sponges. The anesthesiologist lets everyone know of any concerns of the patient. The surgeon asks if everyone is in agreement and if they have any questions or concerns at that time. Once everyone has checked and double checked, the operation begins. A breast augmentation operation usually takes about an hour.
