What to Expect on your Breast Augmentation Journey

So, you’ve decided to have breast augmentation surgery. Congratulations! You took the first step to feeling more confident in your own skin. When deciding on different options, it’s important that the plastic surgeon who will be performing your surgery has experience performing all procedures in an accredited surgical facility. From the consultation to the result, it’s crucial that you make the decision to go with a practice with an expert staff and a board certified plastic surgeon who will take care of you along the way. Here is what you can expect during each stage of the process:
Consultation
The goal of this stage is for you to leave the appointment decided upon the size and type of implant you desire. It’s a good idea to do your research and have a general idea, your doctor will lead you in the correct direction through several techniques. At your consultation your doctor will explain the process, what to expect after surgery and answer all your questions.
Pre-op Appointment
The reason of this appointment is to go over what will happen on the day of surgery, receive your prescriptions to get filled ahead of time, and have your pre-op photos taken. This is the perfect time to ask all questions you have about the process.
Day of surgery
When you arrive before your surgery, make sure to have someone with you who will be able to drive you home. Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure and you will need someone to stay with you for the first night. Then you will meet the anesthetist, who will determine the right treatment for you through asking questions about previous experiences and your general health. A nurse will then explain to you and your helper how to care for yourself after surgery.
Once you go back to the operating room, you will be given an IV that will deliver the anesthetic. Patients typically remember getting the IV then next thing they know they are in the car on the way home with their new breasts. The surgery itself takes about an hour.
Post-op appointment
The day after your surgery, you will meet with the doctor who will assess how you are feeling, check the bandages, and make sure everything is going well.
One week after surgery
After just one week, you will get checked by your doctor again. Usually, there are no sutures to be removed, they are internal and dissolve. You will still be swollen, but you do get a better sense of surgical results. A nurse will explain proper care for the small scar.
